Facial Peels in Taunton
Facial Peels Frequently Asked Questions Answered by Dr Baines - Taunton Facial Peel Expert
What is a facial peel?
Facial peels remove the top layer of skin which is the epidermis, to exfoliate and speed up the cell and skin regeneration. There are different types of peels you can choose from and some peels exfoliate more than others. All facial peels involve applying a chemical or natural solution to your face to speed up the exfoliation and the natural skin regeneration process.
What does a facial peel do?
The skin has three layers:
1. The epidermis which is the outermost layer of skin, it provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone
2. The dermis which is beneath the epidermis and contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands
3. The deeper subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis) is made of fat and connective tissue
The skin’s colour is created by special cells called melanocytes, which produce the pigment melanin. Melanocytes are located in the epidermis.
Chemical peels are liquids brushed on to the face to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the growth of new cells in the lower sections of the skin.
The aim of a professional peel is to improve the appearance of the facial skin, by reducing age spots and evening out skin tone and much more.
There are three types of peel: superficial, medium and deep and a professional consultant will assess your skin and talk to you about a treatment plan that will suit your skin and help you achieve the results you are looking for.
What does a facial peel treatment involve?
Superficial Peels:
The skins cells are removed from the top layer of skin, the epidermis, by leaving the peel on the skin for a few minutes. You may feel a slight tingling warm sensation and your consultant should check with you throughout your treatment. Your skin may feel tight for a couple of hours after the treatment and your skin will look fresher and revitalised. You may experience slight shedding of the skin a few days later and your consultant should talk you through this and what you need to do as aftercare. Regular treatment is needed to maintain the effects.
Medium Peels:
The skin cells are removed from the top and middle layers of skin. Again the peel is left on the skin for a few minutes and often massaged in. You may feel a warm, stinging or burning sensation whilst it is on. Your skin may go red in the days afterwards, shed, and it can take up to six weeks for your skin to return to normal. Your consultant should talk you through this and what you need to do as aftercare after your treatment. Treatment is normally needed every 6 – 12 months to maintain the effects.
Deep Peels:
A deep facial peel affects the deeper layers of the skin and as it is much stronger a local anaesthetic may be needed. You may feel a freezing sensation when the peel is applied and it can be left on the face for 30 minutes or more. You will experience peeling, redness and discomfort for a few days and swelling can last up to two weeks. Skin redness can last up to three months as your skin regenerates its good cells. It is normally a one-off treatment with lasting effects, but your consultant will talk you through this.
Why would I have a facial peel?
Everyone can benefit from a professional peel, whether you want glowing skin, a smoother texture and if you suffer from particular skincare issues like; acne, congested pores, ageing, hyperpigmentation, acne, post acne scars, rosacea and sensitive skin.
What are the benefits of a facial peel?
Most skin imperfections are the result of sun damage, acne, ageing or a build-up of dead skin cells that clog the pores, resulting in dull, wrinkled, spotty, scarred and patchy skin. A peel can dramatically improve the appearance of the skin on the face, hands, neck and décolletage.
A facial peel can:
o Stimulate the skin’s natural renewal process
o Regulate skin cell production
o Boost collagen synthesis
o Clean and refresh the skin
o Diminish expression lines and wrinkles
o Slow down the ageing process
o Lighten and even skin tone
o Clean and refresh skin texture
o Relieve skin inflammation and redness
o Regulate sebum production
o Remove dead skin cells
o Prevent oily sheen and breakouts
o Speed up the healing process of blemishes
o Sooth problematic areas common to problem prone skin
What are the risks of a facial peel?
The risks of a skin peel depend on the skin of an individual however they are rare.
Possible risks include:
o Darkening or lightening of the skin – this can be permanent
o Cold sores returning if you've had these before
o Scarring or an infection – although this is rare
o As it heals, your skin would also be more sensitive to the sun, so you need to use sunscreen for at least a month after treatment.
The practitioner carrying out the procedure should advise how you can reduce any risks, side effects and complications and should talk to you about these at length before you start any treatment.
What do I need to think about when choosing where to have a facial peel?
Everyone’s skin is different and will react in different ways so it’s always recommended you see a recognised specialist before embarking on a professional peel.
The most important thing for you is to find a specialist in facial peels. They should be able to show you results from their existing patients. Research is so important when you are considering peels as if not done correctly they can cause long-term damage to your skin.
Arrange a consultation appointment with them at their clinic and ask lots of questions. Write your questions down beforehand so you don’t forget anything. A good clinic will not charge for a consultation and will never push you to make an appointment.
During your consultation ask to see before and after photos of previous patients and ask how often the doctor carries out professional peels.
During the meeting, they should review your medical history and discuss your goals with you. If they can easily answer your questions it is a sign they are familiar and confident with the treatment procedure.
They should tell you how to prepare for the treatment, do’s and don’ts and what to expect during and after, along with any side effects.
Good doctors will arrange a follow-up appointment after your treatment to check how it has worked and how you are feeling about the results.
You should understand your skin condition, what a professional peel will achieve and the treatment they are recommending in detail after your consultation.
You should feel comfortable and confident with the consultant who will be carrying out your procedure if you don’t then it is advisable to find someone else. Always make sure the person who conducts the consultation will be the one doing your treatment.
After your consultation appointment, research the clinic and the doctor carrying out the treatment. Don’t just rely on reviews from their customers on their own clinic's website, as these may not always give you a true picture.
Look at other clinic’s treatments, reviews and prices as a comparison, and be aware that quite often you will pay more for someone with a lot of experience and proven results.
Always follow the care directions and recommendations from your specialist and never apply ingredients that can irritate your skin post-peel, such as retinol. Your consultant should advise you what products to use and when as your skin recovers.

It is suitable for:
o Ageing skin
o Photodamaged skin
o Rough texture, fine lines and wrinkles
o Enlarged pores, dull, sallow skin colour
The Refresh Peel contains the smallest and most effective alpha hydroxy acid, derived from sugar cane. It exfoliates the epidermis, promotes epidermolysis, and stimulates the growth of new skin. It safely removes the outer layer of dead skin cells, bringing fresh, new skin to the surface.
Phytic acid protects against inflammation by blocking free radicals and increasing antioxidant functionality. It is also able to protect DNA from free radicals. It can enter cells and help DNA repair breaks in the strands.
Kojic acid is derived from a variety of fungi and organic substances and is used to diminish dark areas resulting from excessive pigmentation in the skin. It inhibits the activity of tyrosinase and prevents the formation of melanin.

Derived from willow tree bark, this has keratolytic, comedolytic, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Its lipophilic properties enable the salicylic acid to penetrate and dissolve sebum, making it a highly effective therapy for acne. In addition, it has anti-inflammatory properties which make it suitable for sensitive skin conditions, such as rosacea. Salicylic acid has a mild anaesthetic effect compared to AHAs.
The mildest of alpha hydroxy acids, it has water-binding properties and stimulates collagen synthesis.
This exfoliates the epidermis, promotes epidermolysis, disperses basal layer melanin and stimulates the growth of new skin. Glycolic acid also reduces the amount of surface skin oil.

Face and Facial Peels
The CLINICCARE Glow AHA Peel is a superficial glycolic acid peel effective in treating hyperpigmentation, age spots, sun damage and dull, tired skin. The CLINICCARE Glow AHA Peel is a mild superficial glycolic acid peel which will remove the upper layer of the epidermis (pH 1.7). It inhibits melanin synthesis, brightens the skin, evens out discolouration and is safe to use on darker skin.
It is suitable for:
o Photodamaged skin
o Hyperpigmentation
o Rough texture, fine lines and wrinkles
o Enlarged pores, dull, sallow skin colour
o Ageing skin
The Glow Peel contains the smallest and most effective alpha hydroxy acid, derived from sugar cane. It exfoliates the epidermis, promotes epidermolysis, and stimulates the growth of new skin. It safely removes the outer layer of dead skin cells, bringing fresh, new skin to the surface.
This alpha hydroxy acid is derived from bitter almonds. It has depigmenting properties, inhibits melanin synthesis, exfoliates and rejuvenates skin.
Kojic acid is derived from a variety of fungi and organic substances and is used to diminish dark areas resulting from excessive pigmentation in the skin. It inhibits the activity of tyrosinase and prevents the formation of melanin.
Arbutin acts by reversibly suppressing melanosomal tyrosinase activity and thus prevents the synthesis of melanocytes. It works synergistically with kojic acid to enhance the brightening effect.
